Awnings, Canopies, and Tents

by Liz Ornellas

Sunshine is wonderful unless there is too much of a good thing. If you are looking for a bit of shade for your time in the sun, consider an awning, canopy, or tent for your patio.  You will find yourself spending a lot more enjoyable time in your outdoor living spaces. You could move that thermometer down 20 degrees with the UV protection that is typically provided by a good outdoor shelter.

A business can also benefit from providing shade and shelter to customers near the building or over parking areas.  The great thing about most awnings & canopies is that they can be customized with your business name or logo.  The shelters can serve a dual purpose and easily enhance the professional appeal of your company.

Outdoor shelters come in two basic models, attached and free standing.  A free standing unit will need to be secured firmly to the ground or another hard surface so it is protected from the wind.  Foldable one piece units are quite portable and fast to set up so you can easily put one up and take it down if bad weather is expected.  Some canopies are equipped with a wind sensor that operates a mechanism that will automatically retract the shelter should the wind exceed 25mph.  Awnings, canopies, and tents can be operated either manually or with a motorized mechanism that is available with remote control or a wall mounted switch.

Accessories for awning canopies range from screen rooms, windows, walls (in a variety of materials), floors, removable mats, center braces, louvers, adjustable pitch, zippers or Velcro.  Your awning may be the louvered look of European shutters, domed form, or rectangular with or without scallops. You can have the style that fits you, classic or ultra modern.

Awnings and canopies are constructed with aluminum, wood, glass, fabric (canvas and more), plastics, fiberglass, or any combination of these materials.  Hardware can be aluminum, steel, wood or plastic. Spear shaped supports, add a touch of elegance. Hardware can be customized to set your awning off from any other awning around.

Awnings, canopies, and tents are available in various sizes with an infinite number of options to choose from. You can cover a patio, deck, parking spot, door, windows, or the entire side of the house. Set up an awning canopy in the garden for entertaining. Imagine where you could have comfortable shade with a view that you love.

Choose the color that suits you, whether the canopy awning is fabric or powder coated metal. Stripes, leaf designs, geometrics, and colors to match your building or contrast for a unique welcome are available.
